A 40th Anniversary Collection
In 1970, visionary jazz producer Creed Taylor went independent with CTI, the label he formed three years earlier as a jazz subsidiary of A&M Records. In the decade that followed, CTI, its music, its style, and its discriminating quality transformed contemporary jazz. Taylor assembled and developed an historic roster of artists, supported by a justly acclaimed creative team, headed by engineer Rudy Van Gelder. These ten tracks were chosen by Rudy Van Gelder, Blue Note's celebrated and indeed legendary engineer, from the label's collection of RVG editions. Some of these cuts, such as Thelonious Monk's "Four in One" and Miles Davis' "Budo" from the Birth of the Cool sessions, were not originally engineered by Van Gelder -- however, he did reengineer them for CD reissue. On these selections he worked from the original lacquer discs, giving him the ability to reproduce sound far more faithfully than any previous CD or LP issue. This means that these versions are supposedly better mastered than even the RVG series.
Other cuts he chose were Hank Mobley's "Remember," Freddie Hubbard's "Arietis," Wayne Shorter's "Footprints," Kenny Burrell's "Midnight Blue," Jimmy Smith's "See See Rider," Donald Byrd's "Christo Redentor," Art Blakey's killer read of "Moon River" from 1961, and Joe Henderson's mighty "Mode for Joe."
The advent of the CD allowed the listener to hear on his home system the sound of the speakers in the control room during the recording session, very closely, for the first time. Soon after that, when listening to other people's remastering of recordings I had made, I realized something was wrong. There was a disconnect between the sound of the CDs that were being made and my recollection of the original recording sessions with the original producers. The fact that I was listening in the digital domain made it very obvious to me. I would think to myself, 'Hey, that's not the way we did it.' Everyone listened to these early CDs, but there was very little relationship to the sound of the sessions. When I was asked to do the remastering, that was my first opportunity to give my version of it. My version, using digital technology, enables me to closely approach the way the speakers in the control room sounded during the original sessions.

This seven-CD limited-edition box set from Mosaic is another mind-boggling collection. The masterful trombonist J.J. Johnson recorded steadily for Columbia during the 1956-61 period, heading groups that ranged from quartets to sextets that performed solid hard bop. Johnson is joined on various selections by tenors Bobby Jaspar (doubling on flute) and Clifford Jordan; cornetist Nat Adderley; the young trumpeter Freddie Hubbard; pianists Hank Jones, Tommy Flanagan, Cedar Walton, and Victor Feldman; bassists Percy Heath, Wilbur Little, Paul Chambers, Spanky DeBrest, Arthur Harper, and Sam Jones; and drummers Elvin Jones, Max Roach, Albert "Tootie" Heath, and Louis Hayes.
The music was originally issued on nine LPs; plus, there are 21 previously unreleased selections. Johnson's high-quality and consistently inventive playing is quite impressive, making this box a true must for his greatest fans.
It's time for us to fill a gaping hole in our catalog. And for you, even if you own albums by trombone great J. J. Johnson, to include this music in your collection.
You can't claim to be a label devoted to the great names in jazz without offering a set by J. J. Johnson, and his small group sessions for Columbia in the late 1950s are a fascinating chapter in Johnson's career. The man who, back in the 1940s, dumped all the sliding and slurring so common to the instrument and proved you could play with the precision and passion that bebop required.

Hard-bop pianist Kenny Barron has been a "musician's musician" for decades, playing behind such towering figures as Dizzy Gilles pie, Yusef Lateef, Stan Getz, and Freddie Hubbard. But in the 1990s, Barron began to take center stage, leading mostly trios through a series of albums that established him as a fine composer of intricate but madly swinging tunes. On IMAGES, he's assembled a somewhat unusual lineup, dispensing with any reeds or brass--just piano, flute, vibes, bass, and drums. The result is a set of bright, deceptively easygoing straight-ahead jazz--imagine the Modern Jazz Quartet after a long vacation in Brazil, where they drank lots of coffee.

It wouldn t seem possible to do a reasonable survey of the 20th century trumpet playing on one CD, but somehow trumpeter Arturo Sandoval has done just that. Known as an immensely gifted and versatile player, Sandoval tips his hat to such jazzmen as Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, and his mentor Dizzy Gillespie, as well as classical players such as Timofei Dokschizer and Maurice Andre. More than simply playing tunes these trumpeters made famous, Sandoval plays in the style of each trumpeter, even pulling signature quotes from their solos. It s a remarkable feat. With Quincy Jones at the production helm, the music and backing band changes according to the tributee--lush big band swing, bebop, organ jazz, classical, and Latin music are all covered. Surprisingly, there s not as much Latin jazz as you d expect from the former member of Irakere, but with so much ground covered, this is more of an observation than a complaint.
