Review: All the concertos contained on these four CDs are directed by women: Monica Huggett, Elizabeth Wallfisch, Alison Bury, Catherine Mackintosh. Having found the time to sit down and listen to the whole set really carefully, what I heard pleased me, on the whole, very much indeed, with only the fourth Brandenburg Concerto seeming a little "weak-kneed". The Brandenburg Concertos here cannot, perhaps, quite compete with Trevor Pinnock's legendary recording for Deutsche Grammophon Archiv, but the female directors have all obviously taken a good deal of trouble over the individual concerti and I was able to hear a good deal of detail, some of which I had not noticed on other recordings (and I own six or seven "Brandenburgs"). The playing is really excellent, the soloists are all quite remarkable for their competence and skill. Just listen to Catherine Mackintosh on the violino piccolo in the first Brandenburg Concerto, for example, or to the oboe, trumpet and harpsichord solos in some of the other concertos - this is all wonderful stuff!
The additional two CDs in the box contain Bach's Violin Concertos, the Triple Concerto BWV 144 and four reconstructed violin concertos (one with an additional oboe solo part), all played and directed from the violin by female Australian period-instrument specialist Elizabeth Wallfisch. I must say that here, too, I enjoyed the performances very much, although in the end I felt that BWV 1044 was rather weaker than on competing recordings by La Stravaganza Hamburg/Siegbert Rampe (Virgin Veritas) or by Le Concert francais/Pierre Hantai (Naive-Astr

Two of the albums - Vivaldi's Four Seasons and the Mendelssohn and Bruch concertos from 1988 and 1989 - present Kennedy's traditional classical playing while the 1999 album Classic Kennedy is a collection of classical and folk music, mostly transcribed for the violin from other instruments, which gives the violinist freedom to express his improvisational skills.
The Four Seasons album with the English Chamber Orchestra is played with an edge giving the violin more prominence than is sometimes heard (this is a collection of violin concertos remember). The Bruch / Mendelssohn concertos are often-played works which give the violinist a chance to show off his undoubted talents.
I particularly liked the Classic Kennedy album with its widely varied music, from a relatively straightforward version of Handel's `Arrival of the Queen of Sheba' and Bach's `Air' to Satie's `Gymnopedie' transcribed from piano and a beautiful rendition of Debussy's `The Girl with the Flaxen Hair', again transcribed from its original piano version.

Beethoven s Violin Concerto is his only concerto for a solo string instrument and is one of the cornerstones of the violin repertory. It is conceived on a huge scale and must have presented an enormous challenge to the violinist who first performed the work on 23 December 1806, Franz Clement, who essentially had to play the work at sight.
Mendelssohn was a violinist himself and the E minor Concerto is an integral part of the violin repertory. The concerto was given its first performance on 13 March 1845 when Ferdinand David was soloist. Mendelssohn had agonised over minute details of the work with David yet the final result is one of a piece of seeming great spontaneity and youthful freshness. The concerto was immediately recognised as a masterpiece and has remained so ever since.

Beethoven's Sonatas and Variations for Violin or Cello and Piano extend from the early "Se vuol ballare" Variations (1792) to the last of the five Cello Sonatas (Op.102 No.2). Op.5 seems to be the first set of cello sonatas with a fully written-out piano part (those of the great virtuoso cellist Anton Kraft, published in the 1790s, have a continuo accompaniment). In these, the Handel variations, and the two sets on themes from Mozart's Magic Flute, Beethoven established equality between cellist and pianist. Similarly, in his violin sonatas the two voices have equal importance-as they do in Mozart's mature violin sonatas. It was however more the custom for the violin to have a subsidiary role at the time. The fact that Beethoven's title-pages denote the pianoforte equal partner. There were significant changes in the violin itself, which gave it a stronger voice: a raised bridge, increased string tension, and elongations of neck, fingerboard, and strings correspondingly. A greater dynamic range was the result.
