Arab populations have their “own” genetic disorders, both universal and particular. Genetic diversity within these source populations, along with the fact that the rates of inbreeding are often high and family sizes are often large, constitute conditions that facilitate the emergence and detection of phenotypes explained notably by autosomal recessive inheritance; in which case, the use of homozygosity gene mapping can facilitate the discovery of the corresponding genes. The present book includes 5 parts dealing with various aspects that relate to the genetic structure of Arabs and minorities within the Arab world as well as genetic disorders prevalent in this part of the world. It includes updated reviews of the genetic disorders in various Arab countries and geographic regions. The focus is primarily, but not exclusively, on the group of single-gene disorders with particular emphasis on autosomal recessive conditions. It further includes epidemiological and clinical data as well as inheritance patterns, mutation and polymorphism data, and available haplotype analysis data. The ethnic and genetic diversity of the Arab populations is discussed as well as aspects of genetic counseling practice in this region together with a proposal for an ethical framework for genetic research and prevention of genetic disorders. The target audience of this book includes human and medical geneticists, genetic counselors, researchers, medical specialists dealing with Arab patients or practicing in Arab countries, medical and genetic counseling students, and nurses.

A young Arab man is sent to a French prison where he becomes a mafia kingpin.
Nineteen year-old Franco-Arab Malik El Djebena is just starting his six year prison sentence in Brcourt. Although he has spent the better part of his life in juvenile detention, this stint is his first in an adult prison. Beyond the division of Corsicans and Muslims in the prison (the Corsicans who with their guard connections rule what happens in the prison), he has no known friends or enemies inside. He is just hoping to serve his time in peace and without incident, despite having no prospects once he's out of jail since he's illiterate and has no support outside of the prison. Due to logistics, the head of Corsican inmates, a sadistic mafioso named Csar Luciani, co-opts Malik as part of the Corsicans' activities, not only regarding what happens inside the prison, but also continued criminal activities outside. The innocent Malik has no idea what to do but cooperate. This move does not sit well with the other Corsicans, who only see Malik as a dirty Arab, and the Muslims who now mistrust him. But as time goes on, Malik works to save himself while in prison, while setting up his life post prison on his own terms. Both his demon and his salvation in prison is the specter of one of the first people he really got to know during his incarceration.

Arabian Travels documents the extraordinary power and far-reaching influence of music from the Near and Middle East and North Africa, the music of the Islamic Diaspora. A host of different ethnic groups inhabit the Arab world, whose shared musical culture is earmarked by several easily recognized characteristics. The flowing, highly ornamented melody lines based on skilled improvisation, the linking of smaller melodic kernels to form a larger arrangement like the patterned tiles decorating the wall of a mosque, the use of sound to effect spiritual transport and an atmosphere of immanence. These are some of the distinguishing features of Arabian music, along with the distinctive sounds of instruments such as the oud (the Arab mandolin) and the spiky report of the taut-skinned darbuka drum.
As this compilation will show, the allure of this mysterious music radiates beyond the borders of Arabic nations. Musicians in the West, especially those involved with various forms of electronic and dance music, have noted the close association between music and trance states in Arabian culture. Conversely, artists from the Arab world - who have always been adept at assimilating outside influences - have begun to integrate contemporary technology within their own music, blending electronic timbres with centuries-old melodies and instruments. Regardless of the point of origin though, the sounds you will discover on this disc are at once eclectic and distinctively Arabian. ~
